Rodent Control (Rats & Mice Removal)
Rats and mice – human’s best friend… wait, that’s not how it goes, is it? The tiny, highly resourceful rodents may not be human’s best friend, but they are by far one of our most common house-mates. This is not entirely their fault. As our urban dwellings have continued to expand over the years, natural rodent habitats have been made smaller and smaller, all the while, their population continues to grow, thus creating an obvious problem for the little critters.

Mostly, when you see a rodent scurrying across your floor, you should know that it’s not there to threaten or outright disgust you. No. rats and mice, much like any other nuisance wild animal, are just looking for food, water, and shelter. And your home often provides all three things in one neat package.
However, while housing rodents may be a humanitarian mission, it is not without risk or danger. Rats and mice can expose you (through shed fur, feces, and urine) to things like leptospirosis, choriomeningitis, salmonella, tularemia, and many, many others. Not only that, but they are also notorious for their chewing habits, which may in turn damage electrical wires, or wooden support structures in your home.
Signs of rodents
When you call us, at Fur & Feathers Wildlife Control, our first mission will be to actually determine whether or not you’re dealing with rats or mice, or perhaps with some other nuisance wildlife, like squirrels, bats, and others.
In order to do this, we need to be on the lookout for some of the more common signs of a rat or mouse infestation:
- Musky Odor – rodent urine has a very pungent, musky smell which can become quite bothersome, especially with large accumulations;
- Gnawing Marks – as we’ve already seen, rodents are keen on gnawing and chewing through things in your home, so if you discover gnawed holes, cracks, wires, or furniture, it’s a good sign a rodent’s nearby;
- Odd Pet Behavior – if you’re one of those people lucky enough to have a pet, and notice them behave strangely, particularly in certain areas of the home, it might be a sign of a rodent infestation;
- Greasy holes in the wall – remember that rodents need an entry point into your home, and more often than not, that’s gonna be some sort of crack in the wall. Now, once you do find a hole, take time to examine it. Rodents tend to leave greasy marks (thanks to their fur) on and around their entry point.
How to get rid of rats and mice
If you’re struggling with a rodent problem in your residential or commercial property in Eastern Pennsylvania, then we highly recommend giving Fur & Feathers Wildlife Control a call at +1 866-442-9360. Our team of dedicated wildlife removal experts is at your disposal, and sporting professional tools and equipment to handle even the trickiest rodent removal jobs.
Why call a professional? Many people attempt DIY rat removal first, in the hope that it’ll be cheaper. It’s usually not. When you add up all the removal and protective equipment you need to invest in, as well as the time and effort necessary, you’ll find DIY is pretty much on par with (if not more laborious than) calling a professional wildlife removal company.
At Fur & Feathers Wildlife Control, we like to focus on humane wildlife removal methods, such as live trapping or exclusion. Live to trap, as the name suggests, is a practice by which we basically catch the rat or the mouse, and then use a safe, non-harmful cage to transport and release it into the wild (where it won’t be able to bother you).
Rat or mouse exclusion involves the use of a special exclusionary device (aka a one-way door) installed over the rodent’s natural entry point. This clever little device will allow the rodent to exit its hiding place, to search for food or water, but not to get back inside, thus effectively excluding them.
A word of warning, exclusionary devices may not be appropriate in all circumstances. If there are baby critters involved, they may not be able to exit through the exclusionary device themselves, and thus deprived of the mother’s care, may starve.
What happens after?
Once we’ve safely removed the rats or mice from your property, we want to make sure such an infestation doesn’t happen again. How do we do that? Well basically, we examine the property to discover the rodent’s entry points, and what attracted it to your home, in the first place. By removing these, we’re already cutting down a significant risk of a future infestation.
Not only that, our team at Fur & Feathers Wildlife Control will also offer restoration and sanitizing services, to remove any toxic dangers, and feces accumulation, and restore your home to its pre-infestation state.
