How to get rid of raccoons

Fur & Feathers Wildlife Control specializes in the efficient and humane removal of raccoons from residential and commercial properties in the Eastern Pennsylvania area. We offer a select range of removal methods, and preventive measures, in order to secure your home against current and future raccoon invasions.

How does that work?

Our team of wildlife removal professionals will begin by inspecting your property. This allows us to determine the size of the problem (e.g. how many raccoons are we dealing with? Where are they hiding? What is the full extent of the damage already caused?). Answering these questions allows us to come up with a solution to your raccoon problem that is tailored to your unique needs.

What are we looking for?

First of all, we’ll want to make sure that the critters bothering you actually are raccoons, and not opossums, skunks, or other similar wild animals also known for ravaging your trash cans.

During the inspection phase, we will look for:

  • Scratch marks at the base of trees, or even around the base of your home, may be a good sign of a raccoon’s active presence;
  • Feces (or scat) present on the property may in some cases be the only sign of a raccoon infestation. This can make it tricky to determine just what animal is wreaking havoc on your property, since to the untrained eye, one animal’s feces may look similar to another’s;
  • Raccoon tracks are among the most definite, distinctive signs that you have raccoons on your property. The telltale tracks are quite similar to human footprints, measuring just under four inches in length;
  • Nighttime noises are, last but not least, a good sign you’re dealing with raccoons. According to experts, raccoons are able to produce 50 distinctive noises (like growls, grunts, squeals, and so on), and they will emit these at night when they are typically active.

Naturally, waking up to discover your trash cans have been ravaged is another pretty sure sign of a raccoon invasion, though trash attacks are also typical of other species, like skunks or possums.

Having inspected your property, our team of experts will come up with a unique, completely custom solution for removing the raccoons safely and efficiently. Depending on your personal preferences, as well as the particulars of your animal problem, this may include raccoon trapping, exclusion devices, or even preventive measures in action.

What will we do to remove them?

Live trapping is probably our favorite method for removing bothersome raccoons from human properties. Much like your traditional trap, we set out a baited cage, or trap, and wait. During this process, we make sure to check on the live trap at regular intervals, to make sure the trapped raccoon doesn’t suffer any longer than strictly necessary.

While live trapping is a highly effective wildlife removal method, it might not be advisable if the raccoon is stuck inside the home, or if we are dealing with large numbers. However, don’t worry, because your wildlife removal expert is adequately prepared to come up with the perfect removal method to cater to your own specific requirements.

Once we remove them…

This is where the nice part comes in. It’s not really necessary to exterminate raccoons (or other wildlife critters) simply for invading your property, you know? Sometimes, it might be enough to just take them to a different place, where they won’t be able to bother you.

That’s what we’ll do, once we’ve trapped your raccoon – remove it to an area where it can’t bother you anymore (or your neighbors).

Next, we will focus on restoring, repairing, and sanitizing.

Once we’ve removed a wild animal from your property, it is vital that we move on to the sanitizing and repair step as quickly as possible.  The presence of raccoons can expose you and your family to a host of serious infectious diseases, such as rabies, parvovirus, distemper virus, and several others. And it’s not just their live presence, but also the presence of scat on your property.

Our team at Fur & Feathers Wildlife Control will set about sanitizing your property, and making sure it is livable again (without being exposed to serious disease, preferably!). We will also focus on repairing the damage left behind by your raccoon invasion. Depending on the area of the home the raccoons frequented (often the attic, or shed), you may discover damaged furniture, wooden structures, or even damaged electrical wires.

It is vital that we repair and/or replace these as needed, and as quickly as possible, as well, since structural damage, and wire damage, can increase the risk of fire on your property.

This way, by the time our team of wildlife removal professionals is done with your property, you won’t even know there were raccoons on it! Neat, right?

How to prevent future invasions…

Another point of interest for our wildlife removal experts is making sure there are no more invasions on your property. That includes raccoons, but also other similar wild animals that might be attracted for the same reasons the raccoons were.

This involves…

  • Sealing the entry points – if the raccoons were discovered inside your home, it is paramount that we figure out how they got in. The quicker we seal the raccoon’s entry point, the less likely it is to attract other wild animals. If the raccoon was only bothering the outside of your home (e.g. the yard), we will still focus on fixing your fence, or barring that, installing a fence to prevent future invasions;
  • Removing attraction points – our team of experts will be best suited to advise you on what might be attracting the raccoons to your property in the first place. Like many other wild critters, raccoons are generally hitting up human properties because they find readily available sources of food. This might mean fallen fruit, exposed pet food bowls, and of course, trash cans. Our wildlife removal professionals will advise you on the ideal preventive measures to make sure you don’t attract raccoons in the future.
