Wildlife Damage Repairs

An unfortunate side effect of housing wild animals on your property is that they’re apt to cause tremendous damage to your property. Of course, the exact type of damage will depend on the animal in question. For instance, bats tend to have highly acidic droppings, which can deteriorate wood structures and furniture in your home. Squirrels, on the other hand, are notorious chewers (they need to keep chewing because their teeth never stop growing) and may end up punching a hole through walls, window structures, or even electrical wires.

The most common types of wildlife damage we encounter are:

• Torn insulation;
• Chewed or torn electrical wires;
• Furniture deterioration;
• Gnaw marks in walls and/or support beams;
• Furniture and insulation tore and meshed together for nesting;
• Discoloration;

There are lots of things that may happen if your home has recently been the site of a wildlife encounter, and it’s important that we repair the damages as quickly as we can.

Not repairing wildlife damage can pose a serious risk.

In the case of some animals, there may be damage to the electrical wires, and/or the wooden structures that are supporting your home. Leaving these unrepaired increases, in time, the risk of fire, and/or collapse. This is why one of our main focuses after the animal is safely caught and removed, will be to inspect the property and clear out and repair any damage.

Of course, another important step in the restoration process is the removal of droppings and urine, and then disinfecting and sanitizing process. We cover that in more detail on another page.

Preventing future infestations

Repairing animal damage also plays a major part in preventing future infestations, since it includes identifying and sealing the animal’s entry point. Often, wildlife will use a hole or crack in the wall, missing shingles in your roof, or similar to actually enter the home.

It is paramount that we identify the entry point, and seal it, otherwise, the wild animals will keep on coming. To seal the entry point, we typically use a material that is hard to chew or claw through like expandable foam, wire mesh, or caulk. Of course, the specific material used will depend on the size of the entry point, and its placement in your home.

During this step, we will also advise you on future preventive measures, such as removing attraction points (often food or water sources), so as not to attract wildlife in the future.

While it may be tempting to overlook this step, we urge you not to. Yes, the wild animal itself is scarier and, in some way, appears more pressing, but in truth, you need to repair your home, as much as you need to get rid of the nuisance wildlife.
