A word on humane wildlife removal

As we mentioned, Fur & Feathers Wildlife Control has chosen the path of humane wildlife removal, which basically means we will remove animals from your property, without actively harming them in any way.

Why?

Well, first we need to consider the reason why the said animal is bothering you. Like most creatures, it’s likely just searching for food, water, and shelter. Many nuisance animals are discovered with a nest of babies, or perhaps gestating, and so harming or killing them would be inhumane.

Not only that but lethal traps and poisons are highly unnecessary. They are, if anything, less practical than humane removal methods. Poison, in particular, can take a very long time to have the desired effect, during which time, the dying animal can crawl into out-of-reach places in your home, and cause quite a stink.

So what is humane wildlife removal, and how does it work?

Humane wildlife removal basically involves the use of devices that are non-harmful to the animal, and yet get the job done. Two preferred choices for humane wildlife removal are exclusion devices, and of course, live traps.

Exclusion devices

Think of an exclusion device as a one-way door. When inspecting your property, one of the first things we do is determine the wild animal’s entry point into the home. We then install an exclusion device on top of it which, thanks to its unusual shape, will allow the animal to exit (to search for food and water), but not to re-enter.

Exclusion devices can be highly efficient, though they are not recommended when dealing with animal babies (who are not developed enough to use the exclusion device themselves and thus risk becoming trapped inside without the mother to feed or protect them).

Live traps

Another big favorite in the humane wildlife removal game is the live trap, which is basically a baited cage that lures the animal inside, and then closes its doors. We usually plant a live trap along the animal’s natural path and check on it at regular intervals.

Once the animal is safely trapped inside, we will use the live trap to transport and relocate the wild animal to a place where it can no longer bother anyone. Don’t worry, we won’t relocate it ten meters from your home, so it can crawl right back!

Humane wildlife removal removes the unnecessary cruelty involved in traditional wildlife removal, without stripping any of the efficiency. It allows us to remove nuisance wildlife with a minimal amount of fuss, and then focus on what’s really important – rehabilitating your property and preventing future infestations.
